Alaska: Fishing charter fined $60,000 for violations and loses chance to be listed on Fish-Now

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A Southeast Alaska charter business has been fined $60,000 in connection with sport fishing violations caught in an undercover investigation. Elfin Cove Eagle Charters Alaska LLC is owned and operated by Joe Kulavik of Vancouver, Wash. He pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to one consolidated count of sport fish guide violations. Authorities say Alaska Wildlife Troopers witnessed multiple violations on four vessels during an investigation last year. Troopers say violations by fishing guides included waste of sport-caught fish, use of the fish for bait, fishing with more rods than clients and failure to keep accurate records of fish caught. The company, which initially faced multiple counts, was fined $150,000, with $90,000 suspended in a sentencing in Sitka Tuesday.
