A popular and recently discovered sturgeon-fishing hotspot at Rooster Rock State Park will close to all fishing Thursday. The area, a slough between the Oregon shoreline at the park and Sand Island, has historically been a largely unknown early spring gathering place for sturgeon moving out of the nearby Columbia River for reasons biologists say are unclear. This year, however, bank anglers discovered the densely schooled sturgeon and catch rates are so high it could cause a closure of a major spring and early summer sturgeon fishery downriver to Wauna, east of Astoria.
